Bespoke Silver and Copper Barnacle Cast Necklace

$17.17 $27.47
Description This Bespoke Silver and Copper Barnacle Cast Necklace is created using sustainable methods from your own old, unwanted silver jewellery—making it uniquely personal, as well as eco-friendly and kind to the planet.  Its one-of-a-kind design makes it a meaningful and special gift, especially for those who love exploring the beach and rocky shorelines. Inspired by the rugged beauty of my local beach in West Cornwall—where I often walk with my dog, Jess—this necklace captures the intricate details of barnacles, creating a beautifully tactile piece that feels just like the real thing (read on below if you want to know more about barnacles!). The pendant is hand-carved in wax, with the barnacle texture carefully added.  I then use this wax sculpture to cast your pendant in your recycled sterling silver using the sand casting method.  The copper balls and hand made copper bail are added afterwards. The necklace is finished with a 45cm sterling silver curb or belcher chain – let me know if you have a preference. How much silver will I need? You’ll need approximately 8g of old, unwanted silver to create one of these barnacle cast necklaces. More about barnacles I love barnacles so I thought I’d share a fun description of barnacles written by Richard King for the National Maritime Historical Society  Barnacles – National Maritime Historical Society (seahistory.org) “If you want to be a barnacle, you’ve got to turn upside down and catch food with your feet. Born from an egg, you float around for a while as plankton, then you need to decide where to spend the rest of your life. You are fragile and squishy, so you need to build yourself a shell so you don’t get smushed or eaten. You’ll still live in water, at least most of the time, but to keep from drifting all over the place you’ve got to attach to something with a powerful, waterproof glue”.
